Windows 2000 launched in India

NEW DELHI, Feb. 17

SOFTWARE giant Microsoft Corp on Thursday announced the immediate availability of its Windows 2000 business operating system in India, coinciding with the worldwide launch of the product.

While the server version of Windows 2000 was priced at Rs. 40,000, the desktop version would come with a price tag of Rs. 10,000, company officials said here. Upgradation to these versions would cost Rs. 20,000 and Rs. 5,000 respectively, they said.

Available in three flavours _ Windows 2000 Professional, Windows 2000 Server and Windows 2000 Advanced Server _ the latest software platform from the world's largest software company will be able to carry programming applications in Hindi and Tamil. A fourth version, Windows 2000 Datacenter Server, will be available in three-four months.

``Microsoft has been in the operating system business for 25 years now and Windows 2000 is the result of our biggest, richest and most rewarding development effort to date,'' said Mr. Rajiv Nair, President of Microsoft Corporation India Pvt Ltd.

Industry majors such as APC, Aptech, Cisco, Compaq, Infosys, NIIT and Wipro have partnered with Microsoft to provide solutions, services and support to customers. These launch partners have been working closely with Microsoft to empower businesses of all sizes to quickly become Internet enabled and to make use of Windows 2000, according to the company.

Microsoft has already provided training on its latest offering to over 1,000 Indian customers. In addition, approximately 600 customers have previewed the product and early adopters in the country include Infosys, NIIT, IOCL and the Department of Posts.

The company said it had been working with the independent software community (ISV) in the country to develop applications that leverage the Windows 2000 advantage. Over 7,000 developers in India have been exposed to the product through various developer community activities undertaken by Microsoft.

Eight ISVs will be ready to introduce their applications built on Windows 2000 within 60 days of the launch. These include Citadel, CITIL, Financial Technologies, Infosys, Ramco and Sonata Software.

Technical support for Windows 2000 is being provided by Microsoft through premier support centres and Microsoft certified support centres across the country. Wipro, Compaq, Mediline and Bunka Orient are also providing support.

The company is working closely with original equipment manufacturers like Wipro and Compaq and resellers to make the product available across the country.
